I have an array of 8 in a raidz2, with two drives showing non-zero values in that field (2 and 7 today, it was 2 and 5 a month ago). WebHGST grown defect list. I have an 8TB HGST Ultrastar drive and I was testing it with badblocks followed up by a long smart test. The test still says its OK but badblocks found 10 bad sectors (after the 4 passes) and the Elements in grown defect list went from 2002 to 2218 after badblocks. And there are uncorrected errors (<1000).

I would have naively thought that it would be a monotonically increasing number, but having written a script to look through my data, I see large numbers of drives where it decreased over the past week. Apart from doing selftests (see sg_senddiag or smartmontools) regularly, monitoring the grown defect list of a disk is a reasonable metric of its health. If the grown list starts growing quickly that is an ominous sign. The best grown defect lists are empty ones.
